A SS optioned Chevelle never had a small block engine in 1969 so it could not be a clone with one. All the SS optioned cars came with a 396cid in 1969. You would be better off just building a nice street car that is not trying to be something it never was. It would cost a fortune to clone a SS 396 correctly (could never fool an expert though. One way to possibly tell if the car started out as a non-SS Chevelle that is sometimes overlooked when it's restored as an SS clone: check out the bushings on the front A-arms. Non-SS cars have oval bushings; SS cars had round bushings.
